CHARACTER NAME: Garner Cinderbrooke
CHARACTER CANON: Original Character
AGE: 28
SEX/GENDER: Cis-Male
Suitability: Garner was raised in a cult that above all else prioritizes knowledge, especially forbidden or hidden knowledge. While he has since bucked the trappings of the cult, this desire for knowledge and answers will have him eagerly interested in exploring the setting and engaging in whatever aspects he needs to for his answers. He's 28 and had a handful of sexual relations in the past, so physical relations will be no trouble for him. While emotional ties are a relatively new thing he's been exploring, he values and enjoys them and will be happy to make bonds and explore the various pacts and classes as they're discovered ICly.
Character Summary: An ex-cultist who’s very physically strong and very intelligent and has very little skill in anything else, like social situations. After losing his sight trying to leave his cult in which he was a Chosen of their god, he has dedicated his new life to hunting down followers of his old god until the task kills him.
Class & Powers
Class Choice: Ruler
Class Description: Garner’s summoned mount will be a phoenix with feathers like flame, but not actually on fire. This not only reflects the fact that his group had a phoenix accompanying them as a friend back home, but also symbolizes the death and rebirth of Garner himself as The Open Vein, Chosen of Vecna into Garner Cinderbrooke, Bloodhunter. There’s additional symbolism in Garner’s chosen new faith of following Pelor, the Sun God, as phoenixes represent fire and the dawn. As for his weapon, it will manifest into Garner’s usual glaive.
Canon Powers: N/A
Starting Influence: (1) I’d like to bring Garner in without his bloodhunter or Vecna magic.
SAMPLE SECTION
Roleplay Sample One: Thread one
Sample One Summary: This thread exhibits how Garner interacts with the world around him without the use of his sight by using an in-world ability called ‘blindsight’ that relies on sound and smell. This also demonstrates his wonder for the world and sights he never got to know growing up and the compassion he usually offers to all he meets.
Roleplay Sample Two: Thread two
Sample Two Summary: This thread demonstrates Garner’s thought process while trying to work out a problem and how his mind often provides multiple theories both with and without evidence, though it also demonstrates some of the things that make him cautious and watchful.
Roleplay Sample Three: Thread three
Sample Three Summary: This thread shows a good example of Garner needing help and how he usually goes about that in a non-combat setting.
SURVEY SECTION
1) Do you value emotional bonds with other people?
Yes. Growing up, they were…inadvisable, but perhaps that was by design. In the valley, you must be willing to do whatever is asked of you, even kill those you’re close to, even die. Having connections that make life worth living would be inconvenient for that. And they do: make life worth living. I’m only sorry I learned that so late. Those who taught me deserved to know what they meant to me, if only I’d been braver to say it.
5) Have you ever met someone who changed the course of your life?
Yes. I suppose multiple people, really, but if I had to pick one then it would be the woman who shared her name with me. After I was thrown into the river and fell over the falls in my escape from the Grey Valley, Cazriel Cinderbrooke found me and saved my life. She certainly didn’t have to, but her kindness is unparalleled. Not only did she save me, but she nursed me back to health, taught me how to navigate without my sight, and gave me a purpose by teaching me how to be a bloodhunter. She gave me this life I’ve had for the last two years and paying forward her kindness is the very least I could ever do to repay her.
10) Is it better to be loved or feared?
I’m afraid I’ve had cause to be both in my not so long time alive, so I can readily compare and contrast the realities. If you are feared, people will jump through hoops to earn your favor, obey your orders, and throw their nearest competition to the wolves to not fall into your ire. It is an effective way to get something done quickly, it is also the loneliest and most short-term way to exist.
Those who love you will take their time doing it, but when they do, they will sit with you even when you need quiet instead of wondering if they can make an opportunity of your suffering and weakness. They will defend you with their lives because they see you as worth something to them personally instead of positionally. To be loved is….warmth. Security I cannot begin to describe. To be feared is to be alone and left at the bottom of a waterfall for the carrion to finish.
13) What's your biggest regret?
When I was Twenty-two years old, six years ago, I took many lives. I will not justify why, I don’t deserve that luxury and it will bring no one back. What matters is that I followed the creed of my god, Vecna, and in doing so, razed an entire village of three-hundred souls. Only around forty refugees survived to escape to the closest city. I’ve heard the fear in the eyes of a child that survived when he recognized me. I heard their screams and saw their mangled and burned corpses caught in the moment of fleeing or fighting before I rained fire upon them. It haunts me to this day, but I hope it always does because I know it isn’t half the pain I inflicted upon them.
14) What has been your greatest joy?
I don’t know…if I would call it ‘joy.’ I don’t know if I’ve felt that or that, if I have, I would know it. That said, I know I’ve felt…affection and gratitude and longing. I’ve felt friendship and desire with actual heat behind it. All thanks to my friends. I know what I’ve set them up to do is cruel, I intend to ask them to kill me…and I expect they’ll agree once they know my crimes. It isn’t kindness. In fact, it’s selfishness because I won’t be around to bear their anger once it’s done. Still, I hope they know that they have been the best part of my life. I didn’t intend to care for them when I started adventuring with them, but they have become the best of me.
18) What's your favorite place you’ve ever been to?
There is…a park. In the middle of Emon. I understand there’s a statue of the Lawbearer dancing with her wife, the Wildmother erected there. My friends and I spent a little over an hour simple resting upon the soft grass near that statue as we listened to others enjoying their day and the sound of water moving somewhere nearby. Rory dozed softly and I could hear Yvx’ charcoal pen upon her paper as she drew. It was one of the most relaxing moments of my life. I don’t know if there’s magic in the soil or in that statue, but it felt as if the Wildmother herself was bidding me to relax for the first time in years. I hope I can go back there some time.
